Carolyn Scott is a Durham family photographer. She specializes in candid and documentary at-home family photography in the Triangle area (Durham, Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Cary, etc). Carolyn’s work has been published in several popular books and magazines, including Apartment Therapy, BuzzFeed, and Fangoria. Locally, she’s been voted Best Photographer in Durham Magazine’s Best Of Durham and INDY Week’s Best of the Triangle. She lives in South Durham with her husband Geoff and three cats.
Had an absolute joy working with his family for their son’s birthday! There was a doljabi, an adorable cake smashing, and fantastic table styling by mom, who did all of the floral arrangements and made the cake herself! Some of the party photos were omitted for name reasons from the blog but here’s what happened afterward (including yes, many photos of the dog and cat, who were quite precious!) in their absolutely gorgeous home!:
It was so much fun to photograph this family in their incredible house with their amazing kids! Their house is a dreaaaam, but also SO IS THEIR DOG. Her name is Winnie and I am her #1 fan. She’s like our cat Nadja, but the canine version (fluffy, joyful, Halloween-colored, attached to her dad’s hip). The human kids in the house are brilliant balls of energy, creativity, and intelligence. They enjoy catch-and-release fishing down at the nearby creek and searching for crayfish, reading, playing card games and instruments, and watching movies. We had a very endearing sticker exchange at the end of their session. They kicked their parents’ butts in the pillow fight (3 against 2 so the numbers were on their side). This was their first day of summer of 2026, and something about capturing this particular day for them felt very special to me. The time is fleeting but the pictures will remain. :) Thank you, friends!
This is my second time working with these delightful folks and my first time working with their youngest daughter! She is a total delight and loves popcorn and cats, much like her photographer. Both sisters are super into Derpy the Tiger from K-Pop Demon Hunters so I wore my Derpy t-shirt (yes, I have one and yes, it’s amazing) and immediately was welcomed into their circle of trust (okay, maybe not immediately, maybe had to sing a bunch of songs about crocodiles first, but Derpy definitely helped). I was also thrilled to photograph the incredible fluffy clouds that are the feline brother/sister duo of Chunk and Rhu Rhu again. Words can’t describe petting a cat like this. Our cats are long-haired but when you pet them it’s very clear that they have… how do I word this… substantial physique underneath their coats. Chunk and Rhu Rhu are long-haired but when you pet them, your hand just disappears into the softest, fluffiest cloud, and I’m not 100% sure either of them have bodies at all. They’re just small little angels of fluff and their demeanor is calm, quiet, and reserved – 100% the opposite of our cats in this regard as well. Anyway – love this crew and so thrilled to see them again!
